Iskra Handpan | Shunko Scale | Symphonic Steel

Created by master steel tuner Sean Beever of Symphonic Steel, the Iskra handpan is an instrument shaped as much by precision and experience as by steel.

Beever has been tuning steel instruments since 2004 and crafting handpans since 2013, developing Iskra through years of highly specialized work with tuned steel. Each instrument is formed and tuned by hand through an intensive process involving thousands upon thousands of deliberate hammer strikes, gradually coaxing fundamental notes, harmonics, resonance, and sustain from what begins as raw steel.

This particular Iskra belongs to an earlier generation of Sean Beever’s work, crafted from nitrided steel before his current Flagship instruments transitioned to stainless steel. The nitrided construction gives it a warm, focused voice with a grounded tonal character, while also reflecting an important period in the evolution of the Iskra line.

The result is an instrument with extraordinary sensitivity. A light touch is enough to open a warm, dimensional field of sound, while more deliberate playing reveals its rhythmic depth and dynamic range. Notes bloom and interact naturally, allowing melody and rhythm to emerge without requiring traditional musical training.

This Iskra is tuned to the Shunko scale, an expressive tonal landscape that moves fluidly between meditative stillness, intuitive improvisation, and more complex musical exploration.

Handcrafted in Aurora, Colorado, this is not a mass-produced percussion instrument. It is a finely tuned sound sculpture — an instrument shaped individually by a maker with more than two decades of experience tuning steel.

Resonant. Responsive. Built by hand to be played for generations.
